Thirty-two passengers narrowly escaped a fatal collision on Saturday, February 23, when a commercial Mazda bus traveling from Ibadan, Oyo State collided with a stationary bus at kilometer 43 on the Moniya-Iseyin road.
According to a source who survived the ordeal, he stated that the elderly driver of the 18-seater bus from Ibadan to Iseyin was experiencing vision problems.
He noted that the journey commenced from Ojoo Park around 8 p.m., during which it became apparent to all passengers that the driver struggled to navigate in the darkness, consistently veering off his lane.
As the bus approached a large real estate development at kilometer 43, it collided with a malfunctioning stationary bus carrying passengers bound for Saki which caused both buses to erupt in flames.
The source said, ”We have been shouting and praying from Ojoo Park when we began our journey that the driver could not drive in the night, he was just leaving his lane and driving in the middle of the road.
”We got to that point and he rammed into another bus that was faulty parked by the road beside the new realtor site at kilometer 43 and our bus and the other bus caught fire. We thank God that no one died, only one or two passengers got injured.”
Following the collision, the elderly driver mysteriously disappeared, and despite efforts to locate him, he remained untraceable until all passengers secured alternative transportation to Iseyin.
It was said that the driver’s sudden disappearance could be attributed to the widely discussed African phenomenon known as ‘Egbe’ by the Yoruba people.
”I believe the man used ‘Egbe’ because he vanished upon the collision and we did not see him despite a frantic search for him till we left the scene some minutes after ten in the night,” the source stated.
