President Bola Tinubu has sent a message of sympathy to world-famous boxer Anthony Joshua following a road accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that resulted in the death of two people and left the boxer injured.
In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday and addressed directly to Joshua, the President described the incident as a painful tragedy that has dampened the season, while offering prayers for the deceased and wishing the boxer a quick recovery.
“I extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries,” Tinubu said.
“This immense tragedy casts a deep shadow on this season,” he added.
The President said he stood in solidarity with Joshua and his family as they grapple with the emotional aftermath of the incident, noting that the boxer’s dedication, patriotism, and personal values continue to inspire Nigerians.
“I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident. As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride,” the President said.
Tinubu also urged Nigerians to support one another during moments of grief and hardship, stressing the importance of unity and compassion.
“In moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny,” he added.
He concluded by offering prayers for healing and comfort, saying, “I pray for strength, wisdom, and grace for you during this painful period. May God grant you a speedy recovery and repose to the souls of the departed.”
Anthony Joshua was involved in the accident on Monday at Makun in Ogun State, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Witnesses said the crash occurred shortly after 11am when the Lexus SUV conveying the boxer reportedly slammed into a stationary truck near the Danco Filling Station, before the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane.
Joshua sustained minor injuries, while two other occupants of the vehicle died at the scene.
“It was a two-vehicle convoy: a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV. Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him,” Orojo said.
He added that officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and immediately commenced investigations into the cause of the crash.
